Women's Shoe Icons

For this project, I wanted to make icons that are simple and cohesive. As I thought about what I wanted to make, I immediately knew I wanted to create something colorful. I bounced back and forth between a few ideas but ended up choosing shoes. I decided that I wanted to illustrate popular shoes worn by women using my own style while still remaining recognizable.

I was pretty open minded when I started sketching. I though about designing something music related. I started by sketching well known sunglasses and hairstyles that Billie Eilish has worn. That transformed into record players and vinyl albums. I came up with this idea to create my own vinyl albums with a 70's aesthetic.

The first sketches I attempted were the roller skates and the converse. Originally I was going to figure out how to place them into a square. After some thought, I decided I wanted to challenge myself and figure out a way to make them cohesive without using a square as the background. Once I finished all six, I received some feedback about the shape of the legs. I was advised to emphasize the muscles and add a hint of clothing to tie the icons together. In my final draft below I did define the legs and added clothing to avoid awkward endings.

My final icons met the objectives set in the beginning. They are colorful and simple. I tried to mostly use bright colors while still complementing the different skin tones. I made the shoes with enough detail to make out what kind of shoe it was without making is too realistic. I used similar leg shapes and clothing styles to make them appear cohesive.
